Abakhan blogger challenge - a summer table set

I wanted to take up another blogger challenge with Abakhan. For this they let me choose up to £15 of materials, so I could see what I could make from it.

I wanted to make a summery table set, and so made a table runner, four placemats, and four napkins, and so I chose a lovely gingham yellow with a daisy print, which didn't disappoint at all, and teamed it with a cheerful floral print, which I wanted to use for the napkins. I also added some mustard/yellow cotton for the backing, and used this to trim the edge of the runner. I also added wadding, so I could pad the table runner.

I'd chosen a metre of their pretty floral ribbon, but in the end substituted a lace I had as I felt this was a better match for the set.

I really love the resulting table set. And we had fun with the napkin folding, deciding on a bird of paradise. (There's loads of tutorials on the internet for napkins.)

I used a fancy embroidery edging for the placemats.

I made these very simply. For the napkins I cut 18 inch squares, and simply did a double hem on each side. For the placemats, I decided on 15 x 11 inches and cut the gingham and mustard cotton to this size:

Then pinned, with right side to right side,

and stitched, leaving a 3 inch gap each time at one end through which I turned inside out.

I then ironed and added the embroidery trim.

For the table runner, I added a 3 inch strip each side of a 11 inch wide strip of the gingham

then lay the cotton on top and wadding on top of that. I sewed three sides, then turned inside out and sewed the fourth side. Simple, but very effective.

Abakhan have some smashing prints in at the moment, which would all work so beautifully for napkins and table mats (and a myriad other uses). My current fave is this one:
